The way the wind blows

The earth is unevenly heated because it spins on its axis.  This means that it will heat up in certain parts and not heat up on the part that is deprived from the sun.  The earths rotation affects the movement of water and wind because if the earth did not rotate on its axis, winds would be blowing  from the north toward the south and from the south toward the north. A straight line, as drawn from the equator towards the northern hemisphere the pole or from the North Pole to the equator, as indicated in the example to the left, models this kind of wind direction.

As you probably already know, the earth rotates on its axis from west to east. This rotation causes both the wind and ocean currents to move from east to west. Thus, the wind movement and ocean currents in the northern hemisphere go clockwise and counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere.  Global warming could affects the wind patters because when air is hot it rises, and if too much of the air started to rise, then it would make air to dense in some areas and less dense in other throwing off the wind patterns.

Chemical Reactions

This week we had been studying chemical reactions.  We first placed steel wool over the Bunsen burner and watched as it slowly deteriorated.  That was a single decomposition.  Next we put a steel nail in a cup of copper chloride and the nail turned a brown/red color.

My best work

I feel my and my groups best work would definitely be A beach by another name.  The reason i feel this way is because we all came together and made intelligent decisions as to where everything should be places.  We had the future of our island planned out far ahead.  The turtles and other animals being healthy, a great view of the beach, nice gold course, and even a convenient Police and Fire station. All in all we planned everything out very well and thought ahead for the future wellness of our island, and that's why i feel this is my best work.

Loggerhead Island

On the side of the island with the sea turtle nesting we needed to consider the precautions of the public being a disturbance, also we added free feeding and food for the animals, to keep offspring healthy and alive. We also located the fire and police station right in the center of civilization in case of emergency's. We made a timer on the street lights so that they do not disturb the nesting. We placed our fishing dock on the lagoon side of the island due to the lack of human disturbance and for marine bio studyin. Our golf course could be flooded by the oceanic side of the island but its close tot he lagoon as well so it may not have any issues. We placed a large netting around the sides so that the golf balls don't enter the ocean. The economic benefits are the public housing is mostly on the lagoon side away from the economic stuff. Humans negatively impact the coastal ecosystems with there rowdiness, pollution, and the electricity distributed around the streets. With healthy vegetation and economy we can severely prevent the issues of storms starting. I wish that made the gold course larger, had more public attractions, and more security of sea turtle nesting.

Sounding the sea

This activity required knowledge of the sea floor.  We have to understand that the seafloor is always changing and continualy changes so we will never get one measurment that will last forever.  The abyssal plain is the smoothest and least explored region in the world.  The underwater seamout, is basically a underwater mountain.

Flame Test lab

During the flame test lab there were some slight inaccuracies.  If there was too much oxygen running into the gas, the fame would be to big, to little would make it to small.  It was difficult to know which substances were unknown because they all had a reaction to the flame.  Identification of a substance with only one property is valid because we know exactly what is in the specific substance.  The flame turns color when one electron is pushed from one orbital to another.  The metallic elements used in the activity were

  • Kn03 - Potassium
  • Sr(n03) - Sulphur
  • BaN03 - Boron
  • CuC12 - Copper
  • LiN03 - Lithium
  • CoCO - Cobalt

To heat up the reactants in the metal causing them to react by changing color.

Video and article

In the video, the man starts off talking about how the universe was created.  This is a very controversial topic.  While science and religion do not mix, there is no definite answer as to how exactly the world was started.  We can however take very educated geusses/answers more or less.  16 billion years ago everything had been compresed inside of one small atom.  the energy inside that one atom was so dense and powerfull, that it exploded and created what we know as our universe.

Oceanography

At this point im going to be honest, im still a little confused about the ocean.  I do understand how important the ocean is for the rest of the world and for our survival.  We are as far we know one of the only planets with water and that is very unique.  I cant wait to learn more about it this year because right now i am not very knowledgeable.
many find an escape in the ocean and i think that further than than science can prove the ocean has amazing effects on people as far healing and rejuvenating.  Many people go there just to escape from everyday life and surf and free their minds.

Week one do now reflection

So far into the 2013 school year i have learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing it.  What i like about physical science so far is that it incorporates  math and is more exact than a guess.  I find the labs very interesting and the outcomes weird, yet i learn a lot at the same time.  For example, the bowling ball lab; i had no idea a bowling ball couple float in fresh water, or why.  Now i understand that the density controls the outcome of weather the ball is goings to stay floating or sink.
the other part of Physical Science that i like is the Do Nows.  They get me thinking before class.  It kind of wakes me up and prepares me for the class .

Oceanography is a very interesting topic to me because I love learning about the ocean.  I find creatures that live in the water very cool.  I am very excited to learn about how the ocean effects the world in all different way.  I've also heard the moon has a lot of control over the ocean and the way it sways and its calm.  I do not know much about oceanography but I am looking forward to learning about it throughout the year!
